Abbot Columbanus was in his lodgings and was both disgruntled and uneasy for several reasons, which did not make him an easy companion for the young monk with him, or his long-suffering servant. Firstly, the bleak and barren state of the lodgings, two small rooms, was an insult to someone of his status; it was little more than an attic. Secondly, he had been informed by the young acolyte monk with him that the King was not now coming to Oxford, so this was a wasted effort and journey, when he could have been warm and comfortable in his lavishly furnished house in Eynsham. Thirdly, he was unsettled by the fact that Owen was still in the city somewhere and may reappear. He could not for the life of him remember what Lady Rohese had heard being said, but he needed to urgently come up with a good story to cover what had happened. He could say she was confused if she recovered, but part of him hoped she did not.

The young monk tried to console his master by mentioning the grand dinner that evening that would be attended by Lord Robert Beaumont and King Gruffudd ap Cynan. That was true, and there may be opportunities for him there, which mollified him slightly. He gratified his servant by giving a slight smile as a loud, insistent hammering broke out on the door in the narrow street below. His servant leaned far out of the narrow window to try and ascertain who it was.

‘I think it is someone from the castle, Sire—I can see soldiers waiting in the street. The servant below has let them in. I will find out who they are and what they want.’

The words were barely out of the man’s mouth, and his hand on the latch, when the door was firmly pushed open. The man leapt backwards in alarm as a tall, broad Horse Warrior appeared, followed by Lord Richard De Clare.

Columbanus could not help the first look of astonishment and surprise, but now he controlled his features into a calm expression of mild interest.

‘To what do I owe this visit, gentlemen? Do you require my assistance? It is De Clare, is it not? However, forgive my memory if I do not remember your friend’s name,’ he said, waving them to a seat as his stomach knotted. He knew exactly who this warrior was and possibly why he was here.

‘This is Sir Conn Fitz Malvais, the commander of King Henry’s newly formed Horse Warriors; you did meet last time we were here in Oxford, and yes, Abbot, we do need your help. Lady Adeline told us that Lady Rohese was injured in the garden yesterday and that you found her. The stocky man who ran away from the garden has been identified as Owen ap Cynan, the Welsh mercenary we urgently seek, as does Robert Beaumont. We know from Gilbert, the Steward, that this man came asking and looking for you. So what can you tell us?’ demanded De Clare.
